IS IT SAFE TO HAVE A DESTINATION WEDDING IN MEXICO CITY OR MORELOS?
What International Couples Should Know About Safety, Transportation and Destination Weddings in Central Mexico
If you are considering a destination wedding in Mexico City or Morelos, chances are that at some point you — or one of your parents or guests — will ask:
“Is it safe to have a destination wedding there?”
We understand the question.
At Champagne Events Mexico, we specialize 100% in destination weddings in Mexico, primarily working with international couples and their guests. Over the years, we have planned weddings in Mexico City and throughout Central Mexico, including the beautiful historic haciendas of Morelos.
We don't believe in dismissing concerns about security, nor do we believe in creating unnecessary fear. Our approach is much simpler: understand the destination, work with experienced local professionals, control the logistics that can be controlled, and use the same good judgment you would use when visiting any major destination in the world.
UNDERSTANDING MEXICO BEYOND THE HEADLINES
Mexico is a very large and diverse country. Security conditions can vary significantly from one state, city and neighborhood to another.
For that reason, reading a headline about an incident somewhere in Mexico does not necessarily tell you what the experience of attending a wedding at a historic hacienda in Morelos or staying in one of Mexico City's established hotel and tourism districts will be.
MORELOS HAS A LONG HISTORY AS A WEDDING DESTINATION
Morelos is not an unknown destination suddenly being introduced to international weddings.
For many years, its historic haciendas, gardens and warm climate have made it one of Central Mexico's most important destinations for weddings and social events.
Our team has been working with destination weddings in this region for years. We regularly work with couples, families, wedding professionals, vendors and guests traveling between Mexico City, hotels and haciendas in Morelos.
Our experience has taught us something extremely important:
SAFETY STARTS WITH HOW YOUR WEDDING GUESTS TRAVEL
One of the biggest differences between planning a local wedding and planning an international destination wedding in Mexico is transportation.
We Don't Ask Our Wedding Guests to Figure Out Transportation Themselves
For a destination wedding, particularly when traveling between Mexico City and a hacienda, we believe transportation should be professionally organized.
Champagne Events Mexico coordinates professional, vetted transportation for our wedding guests, including appropriate vehicles and experienced drivers for the routes involved.
Guests are given clear pickup locations and schedules. Transportation between hotels, wedding venues and planned activities is coordinated as part of the wedding logistics.
We do not believe that a group of international guests unfamiliar with the area should have to rent cars, navigate unfamiliar roads late at night, or figure out individually how to return from a hacienda after a wedding.
OUR RESPONSIBILITY GOES BEYOND CREATING A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING
A destination wedding planner's responsibility is not limited to flowers, tables and timelines.
When couples are bringing perhaps 50, 100 or 200+ people to another country, there is a significant logistical responsibility involved.
We are thinking about questions such as:
- Where are guests staying?
- How are they getting to the wedding?
- Who is driving them?
- What time are they returning?
- Which routes are being used?
- Who is coordinating departures?
- What happens if somebody needs special assistance?
- How are vendors and staff moving between locations?
These considerations are part of professional destination-wedding planning.
At Champagne Events Mexico, we will never knowingly take an unnecessary risk that could compromise the safety of our couples, their guests, our employees or our vendors.
No wedding or event is worth that risk.
And, importantly, Steve, Mariluz and our team are present throughout the wedding experience. We don't simply plan the event from a distance and disappear once the wedding weekend begins.
EXERCISE COMMON SENSE STILL MATTERS
There is another side of the conversation that sometimes gets overlooked.
Visitors have a responsibility for their own behavior as well.
Mexico City is one of the world's great international cities, and Morelos welcomes millions of visitors. But just as we would advise someone visiting New York, Miami, London, Paris, Los Angeles or any unfamiliar destination, we recommend using normal travel precautions.
Stay in established areas. Use transportation arranged by your hotel, wedding planner or another reputable provider. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid wandering alone in unfamiliar areas late at night.
And there is one piece of advice we are very comfortable saying directly:
Travel is not the time to go looking for illegal drugs, prostitution or other activities that can put you in contact with situations and people you would normally avoid at home.
That recommendation isn't unique to Mexico. It is common sense when traveling anywhere in the world.
Many situations that travelers can expose themselves to have nothing to do with attending a destination wedding. Our goal is to create an environment in which guests can enjoy Mexico — its food, culture, architecture, music and hospitality — while moving through the destination in a thoughtful and organized way.
WE WANT YOUR GUESTS TO EXPERIENCE THE MEXICO WE KNOW
There is a reason couples from around the world continue choosing Mexico for their weddings.
Mexico City offers extraordinary architecture, world-class restaurants, museums, culture, history and hospitality.
Morelos offers something entirely different: magnificent historic haciendas, tropical gardens, warm weather and the possibility of bringing family and friends together in a private setting that feels unmistakably Mexican.
For us, an authentic destination wedding isn't simply about holding a wedding ceremony in another country.
It is about creating an entire experience of Mexico — thoughtfully, professionally and responsibly.
We want your guests talking about the hacienda they couldn't believe existed, the food they are still thinking about, the music, the architecture, the flowers, the hospitality and the weekend they experienced together.
And behind that beautiful experience is something guests may never see: careful planning, professional transportation, local knowledge, trusted partners and a team paying attention to the details that allow everyone else to simply enjoy Mexico.
